Marie Antoinette Barbie vs. Queen Elizabeth Barbie

It's time for some eye candy! Barbie dolls sure have come a long way since I was a kid. LOVE these decked out limited edition collector's Barbies!Marie Antoinette Barbie DollMarie Antoinette is looking lovely wearing an awesome pale blue dress and her jewels. I definitely think this is the prettier of the dolls. When you think about Marie Antoinette, it's all about the fashion, the style, the luxe. Not much of a ruler though. We all know how her story ended. Recently, she has been presented in a more favorable light. But icon of style that she was, historically she was a weak and ineffectual queen.
Queen Elizabeth I Barbie Doll
Let's contrast Marie with Elizabeth I! Elizabeth is looking regal in her Tudor finery. Her court clothes visually communicated power and wealth in a very different way than Marie Antoinette. Marie definitely had the more feminine outfits, but for all-around monarch it's hard to beat Elizabeth I. When she ascended the throne in 1558, England was an impoverished country torn apart by religious squabbles. When she died at Richmond Palace on the 24th March 1603, England was one of the most powerful and prosperous countries in the world. A successful and popular queen.

So .... I like them both! Marie Antoinette for the pretty (Cinderella would be jealous) and Elizabeth for representing what that monarch accomplished.

Which one do you like better??

I think I definitely think the Marie Antoinette doll is prettier. Her dress is amazing!!
But the Elizabeth I is also good and yes her being a great Queen also makes the doll more attractive.
If I was going to ever buy one though it would be Marie Antoinette. I just adore that dress =)

I don't know that I've ever commented on your blog before, although I read it regularly (I got here a long time ago from your etsy shop), but incidentally, I am actually looking to sell my Queen Elizabeth, still in the box and everything. I was going to put it on ebay or something, but I hadn't gotten around to it, what with basically hating ebay these days. So, if you're actually looking for one, I'm SleepySlug on Etsy, and the same with a - between the words on Ebay.

I like Liz doll because of the attention to detail in the high lace collar, the hairstyle, and the ornaments. And I like the style of dress better.

Okay I get that making dolls of important female figures is a good thing, i think. But Marie? is her head detachable? She was both the victim and perpetrator of bad things that lead to the revolution. Lets take a minute before we romanticize certain figures please.

Hi there Anonymous! I'm no fan of Marie, as you might be able to tell from my post, but she is very popular now in pop culture for reasons that have nothing to do with history or historical accuracy. I'm sure the Barbie version is merely capitalizing on that fad.

Thanks for your comment .. it's always good to express one's thoughts and to have a healthy debate!

I think weighing up Marie Antoinette as a queen against Elizabeth I is a bit unfair. Elizabeth was the sole monarch of her country, and was in full control of her kingdom. Marie Antoinette was simply Queen Consort of France, a role which really offered her no power whatsoever. Not only this but her husband had been brought up from an early age not to trust his future wife's influence with politics or interference in royal business. She was merely keeping her head down and indulging in the pleasures of Versailles that she was expected to as Queen. All in all Marie Antoinette is a victim of propaganda and circumstance.
